On September 27th 2016, United World Technologies attended the 3rd annual Women in Cyber Security reception. It was held by the CyberWire and the Cybersecurity Association of Maryland Inc. (CAMI) at the Columbus Center in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. More than 120 people in the cyber security field attended the reception.
WiCyS celebrated the advances of women in cyber security while also addressing the lack of gender diversity in the traditionally male-dominated field. The event emphasized the importance of inspiring young women to enter cyber security so that they may contribute their talents to the industry. Women pursuing careers in cyber security were encouraged to talk to other women in the field.
The reception also aimed to provide opportunities for women in cyber security to network in congruence with the event’s theme “Creating Connections”. Stacey Smith of the Cybersecurity Association of Maryland echoed this sentiment, saying it was important to “initiate and support efforts to build a strong community of women cyber security professionals”. Smith also said the association wanted to highlight women’s success.
The future of the cyber security industry depends on collaboration between diverse groups of people. Cyber security problems are conquered when approached from a variety of unique perspectives. Learning from one another and working together will ensure the creation and implementation of reliable solutions.
